Who doesn’t love a good connection? Whether it’s the heartwarming bond with a loved one or the supportive camaraderie of colleagues, relationships are the glue that holds our lives together. 

As SLPs, we build connections every day – with clients, families, and our own teams. Let’s explore how nurturing these relationships can significantly impact our overall well-being. 

Definition and Components

Relationships in the context of the PERMA model refer to the connections we have with others. These include personal relationships with family and friends, as well as professional relationships with colleagues, clients, and the families of clients. Relationships are fundamental to our well-being because they provide support, joy, and a sense of belonging.  Relationships are a large part of working in any helping profession.  

General Components of Relationships:

  • Trust: A foundation of honesty, reliability, and confidence in the other person.
  • Respect: Valuing the other person’s thoughts, feelings, and boundaries.
  • Communication: Open, honest, and effective dialogue.
  • Support: Offering emotional and practical assistance.
  • Intimacy: Emotional closeness and connection.
  • Shared Values: Common beliefs and principles that guide the relationship.
  • Compromise: The ability to find mutually agreeable solutions.
  • Affection: Expressing love and care through physical touch, words, or actions.
  • Quality Time: Spending meaningful time together.
  • Conflict Resolution: Healthy ways to address disagreements.

Strategies for Building and Nurturing Personal Relationships

  • Spend quality time with family and friends. Engage in activities that you both enjoy and that allow for genuine connection.

  • Embrace open communication.  Be open and honest. Share your thoughts and feelings, and encourage others to do the same.
  • Regularly express gratitude and show appreciation for the people in your life. Small gestures of kindness and appreciation can strengthen bonds.

  • Offer to mentor.  Be mentored.  Seek out mentors who can provide guidance and support.  Mentor others who can benefit from your experience.
  • Hone your effective communication skills.  Communicate clearly and professionally. Be open to feedback and willing to have difficult conversations when necessary.
  • Recognize and appreciate the efforts and contributions of your colleagues. Acknowledge their hard work and successes.
